Social Impact MarketCatalyst's collaborative environment for social impact.

We help people and groups to connect, collaborate, and share resources. We do that by launching Collaborative Projects that involve bringing together and working with multiple partner organizations towards a common goal. We also adopt unincorporated groups into our organizational structure (called fiscal sponsorship) to function as one of Catalyst's programs. We also connect with about 100 collaborative partner organizations and businesses that share our Common Community Values.

In our 2012-2013 Fiscal Year (April 2012 - March 2013):

  • 0 Paid Employees
  • 80+ Core Volunteer Leaders
  • 300+ Occasional Volunteers
  • 10 Volunteer Board of Directors

  • 10 Catalyst programs, projects, initiatives
  • 23 Catalyst adopted groups/programs (fiscally-sponsored)

  • 40,000+ People Serviced in the Community Annually
  • 2,500+ People Serviced in the Community Monthly

Long Beach Free School

Our mission is to create an alternative and supplemental system of education for young people and adults to engage in lifelong learning.

The Long Beach Free School (LBFS) believes that when community members come together to share ideas, the community as a whole benefits. As a free school in one of the most diverse cities in California, LBFS strives to provide and foster collaborative grassroots learning opportunities that are representative of and accessible to all its community members. With a for-the-community, by-the-community approach to education, everyone is encouraged to participate as both student and teacher. Teachers (aka “Resident Professors”) need not be experts in their field to teach. The only prerequisites are a desire to share knowledge and a love of learning. Everyone has something of value to contribute.

Long Beach Free Store

Orange County Time Bank

The mission of the Orange County Time Bank is to build and strengthen relationships within Orange County, California by connecting people’s unmet needs and untapped resources. We do this through the use of “time banking,” a system in which members give and receive services and skills using “time dollars,” a community currency that uses time as an indicator of value. The concept is simple: One hour equals one time dollar, regardless of the service given, from dog-walking to graphic design, community organizing to tutoring, cooking lessons to massage therapy. Everyone is an asset and everyone's time is valued equally.

F.O.O.D. for Pets

F.O.O.D. (Feeding Out of Devotion) for Pets provides pet food to homeless, low-income, and homebound individuals who otherwise may not have adequate food to take proper care of their pets. By easing their concerns about caring for their pets, clients can make better use of their resources, such as money and food. In many cases, the availability of pet food and more efficient allocation of resources may help a client reestablish him or herself in society. Additionally, of course, it alleviates the potential suffering of animals who may not have had sufficient food or necessary supplies.

In addition, we support and develop networks that facilitate sharing, accessing, and developing food in the city.

Shift Long Beach

Shift Long Beach's mission is to create positive social change in Long Beach through educational, interactive events and media.

We typically address the convergence of environmental, spiritual, economic, social, and spiritual issues in our city and encourage diverse perspectives to gain understanding of these complex issues.

Our events create a platform for local activists and artists to voice their perspective, and connect with others who share similar concerns. In doing so, we dispel the myth of isolation and connect folks to each other, as well as a larger global network of visionary thinkers through The Evolver Network.

Long Beach Time Exchange

We aim to connect diverse communities around the idea of sharing and developing networks of trust, reciprocity, and the understanding that everyone is an asset, and that everyone’s time is valuable. Time credits are a solution that can help to build a different kind of economy, what can be called the “core” economy---the things we do to help each other out. Time banking recognizes and rewards these contributions.
