Organization Description:

Foodscape Long Beach a not-for-profit gardening service that builds and maintains food gardens on peoples' private property. We aim to foster the culture of local growing, increase community interconnection and aid the under-served members of our community through enabling private property owners to become productive and helpful members of the community.

Foodscape Long Beach has organized the Long Beach Produce Exchange (www.pxlb.org), as a means for local food producers in Long Beach to share with their community. Every 1st and 3rd Saturday of the month at 9 am on the bluff at Junipero & Ocean Blvd., people can bring whatever they would like to share and take what they want. No contribution is necessary to take produce, and no cash is exchanged. The event is intended to provide an outlet for excess produce that might otherwise be wasted, strengthen the sense of community in Long Beach, promote the gift economy, and give those who have no means to grow food themselves access to locally grown food.

Long Beach has a lot of growing potential, and we want to demonstrate how well we can provide for our community with what resources are at our disposal here. Sharing is not so difficult, and living becomes easier and cheaper for everyone when we share. A modulation of our culture is necessary for a sustainable future, and we hope to accelerate that change.
